This summer I saw an exhibit of Amy Sherald’s art. She is the artist who painted Michelle Obama’s portrait. I spent over three hours in that exhibit, in awe of the way she captured the often invisible lives of ordinary African Americans. So many of her pieces portrayed the simple strength of unapologetically being oneself, whether alone or in relationship to another. In my view all of the women she painted were fit to be Queen.
